An Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a procedure that removes fat and skin from the abdomen.

There are several types of tummy tuck procedures and the most common types are the circumferential tummy tuck, extended tummy tuck and partial abdominoplasty and traditional tummy tuck.

Circumferential Tummy Tuck:  This procedure is performed on individuals with excessive sagging skin that has occurred due to a substantial amount of weight loss.

Extended:  An extended tummy tuck removes excess fat from the abdominal area and also removes fat from the back, flanks and hips.

Partial Abdominoplasty:  A partial tummy tuck is for individuals who are within range of their ideal body weight.  The fat is only removed from the lower part of the abdomen.

Traditional:  A traditional abdominoplasty re-positions the belly button and typically involves the use of liposuction.

Ideal candidates for this type of surgery are healthy individuals who are non-smokers, those who are not confident about the appearance of their abdominal area and women who do not plan to become pregnant.

The benefits of this surgery include a boost in confidence and self-esteem, improved muscle tone, a reduction in stretch marks and a slimmer mid-section.

Keep in mind that abdominoplasty is not a substitute for weight loss.  Also, women who want an abdominaoplasty after giving birth are advised to wait at least six months before undergoing the procedure.
